Road signs and their meanings are part of CDL tests, so recognizing road signs grants you a great chance to achieve the success of your driving license. One of the typical road signs examined is the No U-Turn sign.

What is the Meaning of “No U-Turn Signs”?

This sign indicates driver that making a U-turn is not allowed.  If drivers need to make a U-turn, they must wait for an intersection that allows a U-turn or find an alternate way. 

Type, Colors, and Shape 

The No U-Turn sign is a regulatory sign which tells drivers not to do something. It appears in a square-shaped sign with a red circle on a white background, surrounding a black arrow representing the U-turn that crossed out in a red slash.

Where is the “No U-Turn Sign” Commonly Placed?

No U-Turn signs are often installed at intersections or along the roadway where 180-degree turns are not allowed. This sign can be posted in some other areas, such as: 

  • On railroad crossing
  • On a highway divided by a curb, land strip, or sets of double yellow lines
  • Where the vision is prevented due to a curve 
  • On one-way street
  • In front of a fire station. 

What To Do When You See A “No U-Turn Sign”?

When you see a No U-Turn sign while driving, you should: 

  • Do not make a U-Turn
  • Keep driving forward, turn right or turn left. 
  • If need to make a U-turn, reach an area where U-turns are permitted.

Things to Remember 

  • Type: regulatory sign.
  • Shape and colors: square-shaped; red, white, black. 
  • Meaning: indicates that making a U-turn is not allowed
  • Location: intersection, railroad, one-way street…
  • Note for drivers: Do not make a U-turn, drive forward, turn right or turn left.
